QuickBooks can be a helpful bookkeeping tool when the setup reflects how your business actually operates. Start simple, use clean categories, and build a review routine before adding complexity.

Start with the right business profile

Confirm your business information, fiscal year, and reporting preferences. Create an account structure that matches your business activities rather than copying categories you do not understand.

Connect only business accounts where appropriate, then review imported transactions instead of accepting suggested categories automatically.

Create a monthly close

A monthly close may include reviewing transactions, reconciling accounts to statements, checking uncategorized activity, reviewing invoices and bills, and reading reports. Reconciliation is especially important because it compares your records to outside account activity.

Know when to ask for help

If historical books are incomplete, balances do not reconcile, or you are unsure how a transaction should be treated, pause and get qualified support. A good setup reduces future cleanup work.
